I often get makeup artists emailing me, looking for work experience..
Of course thats the thing about the makeup industry...you complete a course, you've got all the brushes and the kit..now where to find a job??? The best thing to do is to offer your services to a working Make Up designer.. Try and get experience in all fields..retail is the easiest as you can approach a manager on a counter or send a CV to one of the big makeup houses.. If you want to spend everyday doing something different you are probably looking to Freelance.. This can be tricky as a trainee may be expected to work for expenses or even just for the experience..How to pay the bills while you get your self established is something we all had to face...The other tricky thing is that shoots can be few and far between and you can lose your confidence waiting for the next one... believe in yourself and try and keep up the practise even on friends, its all going to help...
Now heres my top tip.. if a makeup artist calls you to offer experience, say yes immediatly.....say yes and grab the chance with both hands...Often that artist will bring you along for a few shoots and observe how you work..Then will come the day that some work comes in that they are unable to cover and guess who will the first person they call???? YOU!!!!
I couldn't believe it today when a trainee who had sent me a lovely mail, with all her CV and images etc, told me for the third time in a month, that she wouldn't be able to attend a shoot because she would need two weeks notice...! I would love two weeks notice before shooting.. sometimes i get calls for work the following day..that is the nature of the beast...Or you'll be all smug as your diary looks nice and busy, then guess what...? all the productions will swap dates around and evreything will clash, forcing you to choose work and lose work...Thats what happens..
You have to be ready to be flexible at all times. i'm afraid I wont be calling that certain assitant again...But thankyou to the second person I called, who cant wait to come and assist... guess what??? Its not for experience only but a proper paid job.....c'est la vie...
